For some time there have been speculations about whether President Valdis Zatlers would seek re-election. His term ends this summer.
At a press conference today, along with Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity), Zatlers announced that he is prepared to be available for a second term. He explained that he now intends to begin consultations with political parties and that he will be presenting a program on April 19.
Under the constitution, a Latvian president can be re-elected for a second term. Valdis Zatlers has been the President of Latvia for four years.
